Hangeul Day Festival
한글날 축제
Korea celebrates the day its alphabet was published. We hold our festival the day after — a writing contest, a Hangeul booth and food vendors.
Hangeul is the alphabet of the Korean language, created by King Sejong the Great in 1443. It was designed to be easy to learn so that everyone could read and write.
It is known for its logical and scientific design, with letters shaped to reflect how sounds are made. Today it is used by over 80 million people around the world. Every year on October 9, Korea celebrates Hangeul Day to honour this unique writing system.
